As the Republican party implodes while attempting to name a Speaker of the House, we hear the word "schadenfreude" being thrown about in the media.
Schadenfreude, a German word meaning, "Pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others," is an apt description for what anyone not wearing a MAGA hat is feeling right about now. Watching the Republican party flail about in its effort to come to some consensus on who should lead them would be pretty amusing if it weren't so serious.
Their inability to agree on the most basic task a ruling party needs to complete in order to create the 118th Congress—naming a Speaker—doesn't bode well for what they'll be able to accomplish over the next two years.
Naming a Speaker should be the easy part. Things like passing a budget and keeping the country from defaulting on its legal debts are a lot harder, and Republicans aren't making us feel very confident that they'll be up to those tasks.
In the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy their collective embarrassment, with appreciation for their having taught our children a new, very useful German word.
